Boston Dining: Athan’s Bakery – a comfortable place to chat and indulge

1621 Beacon Street

I can’t believe all the years I wasted not bothering to check out what was inside the curved building on the corner of Washington Square in Brookline. I no longer make that mistake.

This Zagat-rated establishment, which describes itself as a European bakery, is not simply a bakery. It is also a patisserie/cafe which, in addition to a large selection of alluring pastries, offers gelato and elegantly-wrapped chocolate confectionery made in its own kitchen.

As usual, making up for caloric sins earlier in the day, a few friends only allowed ourselves to split one dish of gelato along with our coffees. When I feel more deserving, I’m coming back for my own dish. The dilemma: try new flavors or stick with the delectable combination of chocolate and fig?

If you are a coffee maven, you may prefer one of the nearby businesses which specialize in that beverage. But if you are looking for a nice place to sit down for dessert or a sugary nosh, Athan’s Bakery offers more seating than other cafes in the neighborhood and a much larger and more varied selection of treats.

FYI, while I haven’t yet tasted one personally, I have it from an extremely reliable source that their chocolate croissants ooze chocolate as you eat them.

Athan’s Bakery Locations and Logistics

Athan’s Bakery is open seven days a week from early enough in the morning to late enough at night to avert most sweet tooth emergencies.

Take the Green line C train to Washington Square. You can’t miss it.

Athan’s Bakery has another store in nearby Brighton and sister stores in Kalamata, Greece, “where it all started.”
