I don’t have a deep acquaintance with this restaurant (in fact, we only just met), but I’m excited about it because it’s clearly such an all-round useful place.

First of all, it is easily accessible by T – just steps from the Kenmore Square stop on the Green Line, which itself is on the edge of Back Bay and a only few blocks from Fenway Park.

Next, being part of the Hotel Commonwealth, it opens early for breakfast and stays open late 7 days a week except Sundays, when brunch starts at 10:30 AM.

In addition to the regular meal times, Eastern Standard also has a mid-afternoon and late-night menu, making it a venue for after-theater meals or drinks in a city that tends to shut down early. It takes reservations and is open every day of the year except New Year’s Day.

Eastern Standard offers al fresco dining on the covered front patio, which remained pleasantly cool on the hot summer’s Sunday we had brunch there, thanks in part to the air conditioning wafting out to us from the partially opened restaurant doors. There are also overhead heaters for cooler days, offering cooped-up Bostonians a longer outdoor dining season.

The ambience indoors was lounge-like and soothing, with soft lighting, muted colors, and an atmospheric bar. There were booths as well as tables, and a mellow jazz background this Sunday brunch time.

The brunch menu was reasonably priced with an appealing, if not highly unique selection. Our party ordered the Eggs Benedict, Vermont Cheddar Omelet, and Tuna Niçoise Salad. The food was fine; the cheddar omelet was pronounced delicious, as was the home-made biscuit with the Eggs Benedict. The server was very patient and nice with our picky party, which requested several substitutions and had a variety of specifications, e.g., salad instead of home fries and toast, tomato and extra spinach instead of ham, cheddar omelet well done, Hollandaise sauce on the side, no added salt, etc. Everything arrived hot, fresh, and as ordered.

The friend who introduced us (the Eastern Standard and me) said that the dinners are very good. He especially enjoys meeting friends for dinner on the patio prior to walking over to Fenway Park to see the Red Sox.

I found dining at Eastern Standard a comfortable and enjoyable experience. It almost seems like an old friend already.
